Assemblies of internally threaded NPS, NPSC or NPSM parts conform to ANSI (American National Standards Institute) but do not provide a seal unless an O ring is used. Internal straight pipe threads do not provide a seal unless an O ring is seated between the shoulder of the male pipe and straight threaded hole.
More common use of this thread is in couplings used in assembling pipe for rails or guards.
