Custom Taps Designed for Superior Performance

When customers provide Regal Cutting Tools tap specifications for size, pitch and either H limit or class of fit, they expect we can design the proper tool for their applications.  Our designers have years of experience, but without more information, taps will be supplied to produce the thread requested, without consideration of tool performance or longevity.

Production tapping, or dealing with difficult materials, requires information often overlooked when we are asked for recommendations. Remember, we use knowledge of cutting action developed through thousands of different jobs, and don’t know your job’s specific needs.

The cutting face of the tap flute has a hook angle and thread clearance so that free cutting takes place. Entering chamfer and back taper insure straight clean threads. The depth of the threads and whether it’s a through or blind hole is necessary information.

Production tapping of hundreds, thousands or even millions of parts usually is measured by the number produced per hour, or the cost to produce one part.

Regal Cutting Tools can help you achieve the results you’re looking for and will work with you to maximize production or produce threads in difficult materials. The most critical information, often forgotten, is:

  • the exact designation of the material being tapped
  • the condition it will be in when tapped.

Did you know the design and coating for 316 stainless is entirely different than 416 stainless, or the tap design for 4340 annealed will not perform well if it is heat treated?
We offer a pocket-sized card with ten questions, that when answered, will give us the details we need to manufacture special taps.  These cards are available upon request.  Our field representatives are technically qualified to assist you in improving production and reducing cost.
